Leica M7 Rangefinder 35mm Camera w/ .72x Viewfinder, Silver (Model 10504)
Classics are works that clash with the present. They are never modified – instead they are re-interpreted on the basis of a changed world: with the LEICA M7, a classic celebrates a new premiere. Convenience and fast operation of the camera have been enhanced even further with automatic shutter speed control and detail improvements. The Leica cloth focal plane shutter – with its vibration-free and quiet action is a must for a genuine Leica M camera – is now controlled electronically. Form, size and the proven operating concept were retained without changes. Virtually all system components of the preceding models remain compatible. Photography with the LEICA M7 is a surprisingly new and yet unchanged experience.Make automatic exposures: stepless automatic shutter speed control with metered value storage. Work more accurately: cloth focal plane shutter controls exposure times electronically. Stay informed at all times: Unique LED integrated in the viewfinder. Start immediately: An ON/OFF switch is positioned ergonomically right next to the release button. Flash at ultra-high exposure times: In conjunction with special Metz flash units can now flash at synch speeds up to 1/1000 second.Leica’s M7 35mm compact rangefinder camera has been historically renowned for its build quality and outstanding performance, as field-tested by the most demanding photojournalists and avant-garde artists. The lens is built with the Leica M design and has a focal length of 21 to 135mm. All manual operations continue to be present, but this newest update now sports electronic control and operation with an on/off switch that starts it all. You can now make automatic exposures with the stepless electronic shutter speed control with metered value storage. The cloth focal plane shutter has turned electronic, controlling exposure time silently and accurately. An unusual but undoubtedly useful feature is the viewfinder with LED display, a total of

Leica M7 10546 35mm Rangefinder Camera with 0.72 Viewfinder and 50mm f/2.0 Lens (Black) Reviews

This starter kit is aimed for the well-heeled amateur photographer who is interested in the finest 35mm camera available. Although Leica purists may say that the Leica MP is the finest, I disagree since the Leica M7 has more features, most notably aperture priority automation and TTL (Through The Lens) flash, for the same price as the all mechanical MP. Unfortunately, the bad news is that unlike the MP, this rangefinder camera is virtually dead except for two shutter speeds if your batteries die out. And yet despite this inconvenience, the Leica M7 is the quietest, best handling Leica M rangefinder camera I’ve come across. It comes with a 50mm f2 Summicron-M lens which may not be the best 50mm lens currently available, but is still a fine performer, capable of taking fine photographs even under low light conditions with fast color or black and white film. Both the Leica M7 and 50mm f2 Summicron-M lens comprise an excellent introduction to the Leica M rangefinder system and 35mm rangefinder photography.
Is the Leica M7 a 35mm camera for everyone? Of course the answer is no, since a rangefinder camera, unlike a single lens reflex (SLR) camera, has a very limited range of lenses. It is superb with wide angle and normal lenses since it is often easier to focus with a rangefinder than a SLR, and can be as fast, if not faster, than the latest autofocus SLRs. The Leica truly excels as the ideal tool for discrete documentary photography, producing what the late Henri Cartier-Bresson referred to as the “decisive moment” photograph. So if you care deeply about making great documentary photography images, then perhaps either the Leica M7 or MP should be your camera.

Leica MP 0.72 Black Compact 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body with 0.72x Viewfinder Magnification
The LEICA MP is a tool. Made by hand, created for the photographer’s craft. Tailored to the decisive photographic parameters. In compact form, with clean design, clearly laid out. Unobtrusive, quiet, reliable. Concentrated technology for concentrated photography, without distraction by automation. For pictures that only a photographer can see, compose and record. Modern, because it captures the present. Current, because all its features have been optimized. Traditional, because it builds on the accumulated experiences of the pioneer in 35 mm camera construction. Not a photographic whim, but a camera for life.

Leica MP 0.72 Black Compact 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body with 0.72x Viewfinder Magnification Reviews

I started with a used M4 back in ’84, which I regret selling, then years later I bought a M6ttl, which had crazy high battery consumption (new battery ever 8 rolls or so) and I always hated the higher height (vs a M6). I sold the ttl right away when the MP came out and I’ve been delighted ever since.
Everything about this camera is near perfect: the build quality, the view finder, sound of the shutter makes one drool, the black paint is way better than the old black chrome. yes it take longer to rewind the film but I’m not shooting sports with this camera, this is my street camera and it doesn’t kill me to spend an extra minute to reload. The battery consumption is now reasonable (1 battery lasts through dozens and dozens of rolls of film), and the meter is surprisingly accurate. I love photographing with this camera.
Not so sure I would buy one now, I “only” paid ,100, but it sure is a nice camera.

Although I am a fan of Leica rangefinder cameras and lenses, I have mixed feelings about this camera. Without question, it is the best designed, most robust, manual “M” rangefinder camera Leica has built since the original M4 from the late 1960′s and early 1970′s (Indeed, “MP” stands for Mechanical Perfection.). Indeed, it is the first Leica M camera since the legendary M3, M2 and M4 to have its top and bottom plates manufactured from brass. However, it does not handle nearly as well as a M4 or M6 with regards to rewinding film (The spool rewind knob is the worst designed feature on this camera; Leica engineers opted for this instead of the rewind crank which has been a standard feature of Ms since the M4 stating that the camera would be more rigid, and thus, structurally sound. It’s an argument I find very unconvincing. If you opt for a custom made MP via Leica’s new A La Carte program, you can get a M4/M6/M7 style rewind crank at an additional charge, which isn’t cheap.). But film advance is the best I have handled for any M camera, especially with the newly reissued Leicavit rapid winder built for this camera. Aside from these changes and a newly redesigned rangefinder window which is a major improvement over previous designs with respect to flaring, the MP is a modified, greatly improved version of the original M6 camera. If you insist on owning the finest mechanical 35mm rangefinder camera, then the Leica MP is the one for you, preferably one with a black paint finish, since it wears well after heavy usage. Otherwise, I would recommend buying either a new M7 camera or considering a used M6 in excellent working condition.
