Nikon 7430 Monarch 8x42mm All-Terrain Binoculars Reviews

Review by Stephen Adams: 5 Buy Binoculars

41CXYBB7SEL. SL75 Buy BinocularsI really like these binoculars. They are light, bright, work well with eyeglasses and I give five stars because they are excellent value. I bought these binoculars for a nature trip in the Amazon and I use them in the back yard, on hikes and occasionally at the symphony or opera. My sister, an ornithologist, told me to get the most expensive binoculars I could afford. To her binoculars are a professional tool but I really didn’t want to afford a thousand bucks like she was suggesting. She also told me to try out binoculars in dim conditions and to get 8×42 rather than 10×42 because it is easier to find what you are looking for and easier to hold so that the view is not shaking. In the store I compared these with the same power Leica. The Leica was nice but a lot heavier. I could tell the Leica was better, but not three times the price better. It was dusk, overcast and drizzling (ideal conditions for trying out binoculars). For example, I was looking at the brick work under the awning on a building about a block away from the store. I could see more detail in the brickwork and felt more `there’ with the Leica. In brighter conditions the difference is less noticeable and I like the lighter weight of the Monarchs. On the Amazon trip I has the opportunity to compare binoculars with other people. Most people had brought cheaper binoculars and I think as a result their wildlife watching experience was compromised. The only people who had brought comparable binoculars were avid bird watchers. They had Opticrons which are in the same price ballpark as the Leica. Again, they are excellent binoculars but not three times better.I like the hard rubber-armor construction. It does not become slippery when wet. They feel solid but light. I am not so nervous about dropping the binoculars as I would be with the Leica or Opticrons. The firm turn-and slide eyecups (like the Lieca) are a huge improvement over the fussy soft foldable rubber eyecups found on many other binoculars.Looking for binoculars is a lot like looking for Hifi speakers. As the price goes up, the quality improves. At a certain price point you can no longer tell the next price level is clearly better; it is mostly just different. That is a good place to buy, and is something of a personal judgement. Minolta has some binoculars that are priced between the Monarchs and the high end and I think the Monarchs are every bit as good.

Review by Eagle Eyes: 5 Buy Binoculars

41CXYBB7SEL. SL75 Buy BinocularsI did alot of research before deciding on this pair. As an experienced photographer, optical quality was my top priority.

I originally purchased them for hiking and long range mountain scanning in southern Oregon, and while initially perplexed between the 10X or 8X version; I found the extra sharpness of the 8X resolution negated the need for a 10X magnification, because they rendered so much detail.

With the 8X, I spotted a fire lookout station that I’d never seen before, on a mountain 15 miles out of town. Quite remarkable. Added to that, was the research at Cornell University’s Ornithology Center on the web. Birdwatchers extraordinaire; who called them a steal. I concur. I never thought I’d be so happy paying this price for binoculars, but it was a no brainer. Tack sharp, lightweight and well worth owning.

Review by Andrew Toussaint: 4 Buy Binoculars

4114ME807XL. SL75 Buy BinocularsThis is the first Binoc purchase I have made and I will say I am quite pleased.

I have some outdoor friends that have those higher end models made from camera companies that are a few hundred dollars and in all honesty, I can’t tell much of a difference. Just remember, this is coming from a beginner. Obviously experts will point out of the “niddy griddy” flaws, etc. for one reason or other. I do the same in other fields of my expertises. But unlike the typical expert, I throw away my pride and firmly believe in the most bang for your buck.

And these Binocs definitely pull through.

Would have been five stars, but I agree with everyone else; the strap is a piece of crap. Haven’t even bothered putting in on.

P.S. remember that these magnify 20x. The average person will find it hard to keep the magnified image stable. Military uses 6-8x binocs for this reason.

4114ME807XL. SL75 Buy BinocularsPurchased the 16×50 version of these Bushnell binoculars (primarily for star gazing). While the optics seem fine (for the money) the rocker style focuser is easily jarred out of position, even simply by pressing the eyepieces to your eyes when gazing upward or by trying to adjust the diopter.

Probably good for terrestrial use but be prepared to wrestle with the focus when gazing skyward.

Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15×70 Binoculars with Tripod Adapter

41J6UeIqWQL. SL160 Buy BinocularsCelestron and ;s SkyMaster Series of large aperture binoculars are a phenomenal value for high performance binoculars ideal for astronomical viewing or for terrestrial (land) use – especially over long distances. Each SkyMaster model features high quality BAK-4 prisms and multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast. Celestron has designed and engineered the larger SkyMaster models to meet the special demands of extended astronomical or terrestrial viewing sessions. The 15×70 version is one of the most popular models in the series. It offers serious large aperture light gathering in an affordable and reasonably lightweight configuration.Binoculars come in a wide range of shapes and sizes these days, and an even wider range of prices. It’s easy to spend less than 0 or more than 0 for what may appear to be, at least outwardly, comparable models. While they may look the same, they are probably quite different on the inside. Recently, the binocular market has seen a flood of giant binoculars at prices that were unheard of just a few years ago. In general, giant binoculars are defined as those that magnify the view 10 times or more and have 70-mm or larger front (objective) lenses. It used to be that the least expensive giant binoculars cost in excess of 0, even 0. All that changed not long ago, when the bottom fell out of the price cellar. Now, several companies import giant binoculars that sell for half that, or less. Celestron’s 15×70 SkyMaster binoculars are one of the leaders in the low-price giant binocular arena. They certainly sound good on paper. The SkyMasters include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms, two features that promise brighter, better images, and key points to look for when judging a pair of binoculars. They also come with an adapter for attaching them to a

Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15×70 Binoculars with Tripod Adapter Reviews

Review by D. J. deJong: 5 Buy Binoculars

41J6UeIqWQL. SL75 Buy BinocularsI’ve been an amateur astronomer for about 23 years. I have a broad amount of experience with the kind of optics that are used for astronomy. I have used most every type of instrument and have visited some of the great professional telescopes. I have hand built my own newtonian telescope including machining the german equatorial mount. Soon after completing this instrument I took it to a star party and ended up on my back with a pair of Fujinon SX binoculars. To make a long story short, I preferred the binos to the view in my telescope. Telescopes are expensive, they are big, heavy, hard to move, hard to store, complicated to set up correctly, and the view through the eyepiece can be crowded and dissapointing. For the casual observer binoculars are the superior choice. They are everything that a telescope is not…relatively cheap, light, easy use. And because they are so easy to use, you will end up using them much more often than you would a cumbersome telescope. That aspect of binoculars alone will make them show you much more than a telescope ever would. The Celestron 15X70 Skymasters are by far and away the best amateur astronomy instrument for the money on the market right now. They are truly and incredible value. You could spend 0+ on Fujinon SX binoculars and have a very fine instrument, but after using these, that would be a hard argument to make. Most everyone’s eyes are not able to discern the fine differences between the two instuments. Mind you, I am not telling you that these are as good as the Fujinons, but at about a 10th of the price…well you get the idea. My experience with Celestron is that they are a first class operation. And now with their lifetime no-fault warranty, the best in the industry, you can purchase products from them knowing that if anything ever goes wrong for whatever reason, they will always stand behind their product. If you are looking to get started in astronomy or looking for an excuse to leave your telescope in the closet, these binoculars are a great value and with proper care will last a lifetime and show you more wonders than you will ever see frustrating yourself with a high magnification-small field telescope. Get them, take them outside at night with your kids and wonder why…….

Review by Terry Durbin: 5 Buy Binoculars

41J6UeIqWQL. SL75 Buy BinocularsMy first night out under dark skies with these binoculars was a terrific experience. In ninety minutes of observing I had great views of M36, M37, M38, M44, M50, easily saw the Trapizium in Orion’s nebula, saw the Andromeda galaxy and it’s companions streaching across 75% of my FOV. It had taken me two observing sessions with my 5″ reflector to find M33, with the Binoculars I found it in two minutes, M81 and 82 were also easy.

All this and I don’t even have a tripod yet. I may well spend more time with the 15 X 70′s than I do with my telescope.

They are also great for terrestrial viewing. Contrast and definition are excellent. Best optical value I’ve ever seen.

31LXWrYDDoL. SL75 Buy BinocularsThese are for anyone on a budget that wants to upgrade from that old pair of travel binoculars or from Uncle Fred’s 1954 hand-me-downs. They are *Waterproof* (very important, it’s easy to confuse these with the lower-quality Nikon Action range) and fogproof, with clear and bright images. Very solid feel and compact for a full-size Porro-prism design. The 7×35 version of the Action Extreme won the highest position in the Cornell Ornithology Lab 2005 binocular shootout out of 15 budget entries – probably because the 8×40 was not tested.

Yes, they aren’t perfect – higher price will get you sharper optics, lighter weights, and slightly better handling – but at this price the only alternative I could find is the Leupold 6×30 Yosemite for around 25% less – and that model is a 6x magnification.

I’m not sure why, but many sites don’t cover the warranty on these. You get excellent support from Nikon USA – a 25-year no-fault warranty with a fix or replace fee for the original owner. Combined with the low price and build quality this could be the last pair of binoculars you will ever need to buy.

31LXWrYDDoL. SL75 Buy BinocularsI am a long-time birder and have used several different low- to mid-priced binoculars over the past 15 years. I bought these binoculars a month ago, have taken them out on 8-9 birding trips and and have found them to be excellent in all respects.

The binoculars are sturdy and well-balanced without being unduly heavy. The optics make for a very clear, bright image in all conditions. I particularly like that they have three click-stop adjustments for the length of viewing, making it easy for people wearing glasses to get the right length. I also very much appreciate the close-focus capability: about 9 feet, which is much closer than other pairs I have used and which makes them reasonably good for watching butterflies.

I would recommend these to any birder.

21WYANSBZQL. SL75 Buy BinocularsI was looking for a medium-powered pair of binoculars for back yard astronomy. I had picked up a pair of Bushnell 10X50′s for a few dollars less than the Nikon’s and I was disappointed with the quality (there was something wrong with the optics… could not get them to ever completely focus). I promptly returned them and picked up these. What a difference! They were much clearer than the Bushnell’s, and the focus is extremely sharp in the center. I take them out just about every night and they offer me a great view of the sky.
